Major things first. Decide the fundamental structure of your filing system. Which way are you going to categorise your shots. These are just a few: 

· By Date: The date on which the photos were taken 

· By Event: Weddings, Holidays, Christmas, Birthdays, Christenings etc. 

· By Subject: Boats, Windmills, Travel, Sea, Landscapes, Castles, People etc 

The first category is obvious but the other two are not quite so obvious. In the “Event” category. The filing system is geared more towards personal events that have taken place. 

The “Subject” category, however is geared towards specific topics that are not related to events at all. Some examples will illustrate this.

Events 

Lets us take the “Weddings” category as an example. In this case it would be sensible to create a folder labelled “Weddings and then create sub folders for different weddings within that category and store you shots in these.
