However, other professionals use medium format (or larger) film cameras and then scan the results when a digital version of the image is required.

The obvious large advantage of digital cameras, is that you can instantly see the results of your shots using the playback feature. With film, some professional still use polaroid backs on their cameras to check everything is ok before leaving the shoot. However, digital backs are now available for some pro cameras to ease the problem.

To sum it up, the advantages of digital over film are:

·  No film cost

·  Instant results

·  No film processing costs

·  Easy modification of the images

·  No film negatives to store.

And the advantages of film over digital are:

·          Higher resolution and contrast range particularly in larger format

·          Cheap second hand cameras available, although this changing rapidly.

·          Film can be scanned into your computer to manipulate images and to store them.
